Discipline tools for children

Updated 11/18/24

To punish children, parents often use devices to facilitate the spanking process. This is especially true for adolescents, when the hand is ineffective. According to the testimonies of the offenders, a wide variety of tools are applied to them. The inexhaustible imagination of parents in such a case is simply unbelievable. From the classic type of  belt to the most exotic ones like nettles or washing machine hose. In this section I have tried to exhibit items that I have found references to not only on the internet, but that were used on me when I was growing up. I guess that the list may not be complete, so I would be very grateful to my blog readers if they would add to it in their comments.

implement #1. The spoonNot by ranking, but by frequency of use maybe, although I could be wrong.  So it's an ordinary wooden spoon. It is often used in the kitchen and is present in every housewife's toolkit. This object is always at hand and is safe for punishing offenders of any age. Its safety does not mean that it is harmless. According to reviews - it is simply terrible! For teenagers the spoon should be bigger and more massive.

implement #2The spatula. A regular wooden spatula! It differs little from a spoon, except for its shape. Its functional and disciplinary characteristics are the same as those of a spoon.

implement #3The leather belt. A classic instrument of punishment known all over the world. There is no country where the double purpose of this device is not known. It is often used in families against disobedient children, especially adolescents. After a severe flogging, it leaves welts and bruises that do not disappear for several days. Don't try to call it 'spanking'. It's beating and abusing children!

implement #4The hair brush.  This is probably the most common tool for spanking children and teenagers. It is present in all families and is always easily accessible. The brush is usually made of either wood or plastic. Wooden brushes are considered to be the most effective. The brush is actually a mini-paddle. According to offenders, "it's very, very stinging!". Especially when parents use it after 'warming up' the buttocks with their hand.

implement #5The bath brush.  This brush is not much different from a hair brush except for the long handle. This allows for a wider swing, but this advantage is small in the OTK (over the knees) position. When the child is in a different position, such as bent over the armchair, this tool becomes very serious and very painful.

implement #6The LEXAN paddle.  The number one bottom killer, as rated by absolutely every teenager who has ever received it. It is made from highly durable polycarbonate plastic. Polycarbonate is used in a variety of applications and is very hard, transparent and indestructible. It is used in construction (in greenhouses), transparent part of automobile lighting, cockpit canopy for military aircraft and even for making furniture. And, of course, paddles for spanking boys.

22 year old Tim testifies:
"Jerry says 'it's a plastic weapon of ass destruction' and he is right. The boy who receives the lexan will spend several hours wriggling and squirming, in a sea of tears and snot and sadness for the incredible pain. After age 15 or 16 I almost always received the lexan paddle after hand starting and sometimes together with belt! Differently by belt, the stinging slowly appear and never disappear, after hours it still remain and the butt destruction continues… maybe the redness will disappear soon but the pain, warm, stinging will stay for hours and hours and hours… When parents spank you with this weapon at bedtime  be sure to spend the whole night without sleeping and sure no staying on your back. The drilled paddle, more, have a faster landing and impact and more pain.  It's treacherous. Transparent and lightweight, looks harmless".

implement #7Scottish Tawse.  The tawse is a so-called Scottish belt, or more precisely, a belt whip. It looks like this: a rectangular piece of hard leather, shaped like a belt, sometimes cut into 2-3 or even 4 strips, sometimes with a handle for convenience. Tawse was used to punish children in Scottish schools. It was most commonly used to punish girls. In most cases, girls were beaten on the arms or shoulders, only in a few cases were the pantaloons removed. Surprisingly, corporal punishment was only abolished in private schools in Scotland in 2000. Prior to that, the offender could be caned on the hand with a cane. The tawse was a traditional form of punishment in Scottish schools for many years and was made by special order of the education authorities. The standard Scottish school belt was made of thick, stiff leather and had the following dimensions 53 cm long and 3.5 cm wide.

implement #8The leather strap.  The term "strap" refers to any leather strip of any size that parents often use in place of a regular belt. A strap can have a wide variety of household uses. It can be a strap from an old woman's purse or a strap used to sharpen razors (with the metal parts removed).

implement #9The dog leash.  A formidable leather weapon of parental retribution for the naughtiest of children. Every family with a dog has one. It's always handy. It usually hangs in the hallway. In fact, it is a whip, small in width, considerable in thickness, sometimes even round in cross section. Think three times before punishing a child with it. It leaves deep welts, bruises, and sometimes even tears the skin.

implement #10The rattan cane. Rattan cane - the stem of various climbing palms of the genus Calamus and related genera used to make wickerwork and furniture and canes. Thin rattan canes were the standard implement for school corporal punishment in England and Wales, and are still used for this purpose in schools in Malaysia, Singapore, and several African countries. The usual maximum number of strokes was six, traditionally referred to as getting "Six of the best". Rattan cane leaves deep, bumpy welts that remain on the skin for several days. Depending on the force of the blow, it can even cut the skin to the point of bleeding. This is especially the case when whipping the bare bottom.

implement #11The birch (switch, rod). A birch rod (often shortened to "birch") is a bundle of leafless twigs bound together to form an implement for administering corporal punishment (birching). Birching is a form of corporal punishment with a birch rod, typically used to strike the recipient's bare buttocks, although occasionally the back and/or shoulders. Contrary to what the name suggests, a birch rod is not a single rod and is not necessarily made from birch twigs, but can also be made from various other strong and smooth branches of trees or shrubs, such as willow. A hazel rod is particularly painful; a bundle of four or five hazel twigs was used in the 1960s and 1970s on the Isle of Man, the last jurisdiction in Europe to use birching as a judicial penalty.

Another factor in the severity of a birch rod is its size - i.e. its length, weight and number of branches. In some penal institutions, several versions were in use, which were often given names. For example, in Dartmoor Prison the device used to punish male offenders above the age of 16—weighing some 16 ounces (450 g), and 48 inches (1.2 m) long—was known as the senior birch.

In the 1860s, the Royal Navy abandoned the use of the cat o' nine tails on boy seamen. The cat had acquired a nasty reputation and was replaced by the birch, with which the wealthy classes were more familiar, having been chastised with it during their schooling. Around the same time, the civilian courts system followed the Navy's example and switched to birches for the judicial corporal punishment of boys and young men.

For birching, if the recipient was a small child, he or she could practically be punished over the applicant's knee. Otherwise, the child would be bent over an object such as a chair or lie on the bed. The recipient was often tied up if he wriggled too much or tried to escape. A simple alternative position known from school discipline is horsing, where the person to be punished is held by the arms over the back of another person (e.g. a classmate), or on the shoulders of two or more colleagues. However, at Eton College and schools of similar standing, the recipient was made to kneel on a special wooden block.

Another device used to immobilise offenders was a birching table, used in Scotland, with two holes in it through which the offender's arms were inserted but otherwise left free and untied. The offender's feet were tied into position and a strap fastened immediately above the waist.

implement #12The ping-pong racket. A ping-pong racket is used by some parents as a small paddle. The rubber coating on one side has usually been removed. Although if the racket was old and the “spikes” were worn to the ground, it was not necessary to remove the rubber base. Rubber over bare skin is the sound punishment for a naughty child! Comfortable handle, sufficient weight and most importantly - a shape that perfectly covers the whole “cheek” of the bare butt. All this allows you to use this device for spanking children to this day.
